The panel saw is often the perfect tool, whether you're building new kitchen cabinets or crafting new woodwork for your living room. Unfortunately, many home DIYers resist adding a panel saw to their garage or basement workshops. The reason? They're worried that they'll injure themselves by using the powerful panel saw.
This is too bad. When used safely, a panel saw can be one of the most versatile and useful tools in a home workshop. Some fear among amateur carpenters is understandable, of course; Panel saws do look a bit intimidating. It's important to note, though, that they are actually quite safe when you use them properly.

The first rule of panel saw safety is the easiest: Never try to alter the safety features of your panel saw. Never, for instance, take off your panel saw's blade guard. The guard is there for a reason. Removing it can cause serious injury.
The blade guard prevents your hands from accidentally touching your panel saw's blade when it is running. The guard also features safety devices known as pawls. These devices hold a board in place. This prevents boards from jerking or kicking, and then hitting you as your operate your panel saw. Kicking is not an infrequent occurrence. In fact, it ranks as one of the most common causes of injury for home workers who are improperly operating a panel saw.
The good news is that today's panel saws are safer than ever. Many come with a switch that users must first pull out to turn on a panel saw. Some manufacturers even let you place this switch in whatever location is most comfortable for you. If you have this option, mount the switch where you can easily turn the saw off by bumping it with your leg. This allows you to turn off your panel saw even if you can't get to the "off" button with your hands. It's one way to prevent serious injury.
Most panel saws also come with keys that help prevent children and others from accidentally turning them on. When this key is not connected to the panel saw, it cannot be turned on. This important safety feature can prevent young children, who are naturally curious, from accidentally switching your power saw on. Never keep the key in your power saw when you are not using it.
Operating a panel saw safely is an easy task if you simply follow your manufacturer's instructions, refrain from altering your panel saw and store it properly so that your children won't be able to turn it on accidentally.
